Hugh Dalton
|
|
(1887–1962, baron 1960) Labour politician who was in *Churchill's wartime government (responsible for 'economic warfare' and then for trade) and who became the first chancellor of the exchequer (1945–7) in the postwar Labour government. His time in this office came to an abrupt and sad end in November 1947. On his way into the chamber of the Commons, where he was to deliver his budget, he answered some questions (off the record, as he thought) from the lobby correspondent of the Star. The details were on sale on the street a few minutes before they were announced in the House and Dalton resigned. He returned to the cabinet in June 1948 as chancellor of the duchy of Lancaster.
