(26 Aug. 1346) Victory by *Edward III over the French during the first phase of the *Hundred Years' War, at Crécy-en-Ponthieu (50km/31m S of Boulogne). It was the first demonstration of the power of the *longbow, with which the English archers devastated a larger and more heavily armed French force.
