(1918-77) Labour politician and author who established himself with The Future of Socialism (1956) as the leading theorist of the middle ground in left-wing politics. He held various cabinet posts during the Labour government of 1964–70 and had been Callaghan's foreign secretary for just ten months when he died of a brain haemorrhage in 1977.
