Crathes Castle

(24km/15m SW of Aberdeen) Tower house of 1553–1602, with additions in the early 18C, built by the Burnett family. They had been granted land here by *Robert the Bruce in 1323 for their support at Bannockburn; the ancient Horn of Leys, still to be seen in the castle, is believed to have accompanied this grant. The interiors are distinguished by painted wooden ceilings, in a strong primitive style, completed in 1602. The eight separate but adjacent gardens, planted for a range of effects at every season, were created in the early 20C by Sir James and Lady Burnett.
