(1886–1957) Composer known in particular for some very famous pieces of incidental music. By the Sleepy Lagoon (1930) became the signature tune for *Desert Island Discs. His march Knightsbridge (1932) was used to introduce the radio programme In Town Tonight (1933–60). Calling All Workers began each day's version of *Music While You Work. And the *Dam Busters march featured in the score for the 1954 film.
