(1904–79, kt 1971) Financier, son of immigrants from Russia, who built up a large commercial empire including real estate, manufacturing companies (his British Shoe Corporation was the country's largest maker of footwear) and many retail businesses (among them Selfridges), which he grouped together under the name of Sears. He established the Clore Foundation, which has made many large charitable donations – most notably the Clore Gallery at the *Tate.
