Followers of the teaching of the American Mary Baker Eddy (1821–1910), as expressed in her Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures (1906). The sect lays great emphasis on the Bible and on spiritual healing (the resulting rejection of conventional medicine being its most controversial aspect). Mrs Eddy founded the First Church of Christ, Scientist, in Boston. There are now some 2500 branch churches and societies internationally, of which about 215 are in Great Britain.
