(London EC4) A pub of great antiquity, just off Fleet Street, with many writers and artists among its past patrons. Even Samuel *Johnson is claimed to have been of their number, though hard evidence is lacking. A more certain regular was a parrot at the time of World War I. On Armistice night it repeated some 400 times its trick of imitating the pop of a champagne cork, before collapsing from temporary exhaustion.
