Charity Commission
|
|
(London SW1) Public body established in 1853, and in its present form deriving from the Charities Act of 1960. It keeps a register of Britain's charities (there are some 170,000) and decides on new applications for charitable status, as well as providing advice and checking on abuses. There are five charity commissioners, of whom three are full-time; at least two of the five must be lawyers.
