(1910–99, kt 1952) Architect and watercolourist, who first achieved prominence as 'director of architecture' for the *Festival of Britain in 1951. Subsequent designs include the Arts Faculty building at Cambridge and the elephant and rhino pavilion (1962–5) at London Zoo. His delicate watercolours were very widely seen in a children's book which he illustrated in 1980, The Old Man of Lochnagar, written by the prince of *Wales; and he has published books of sketches of London (1983), Oxford (1988) and Cambridge (1992). He was president of the Royal Academy 1976–84.
