Carry On series
|
|
Nearly 30 films, extremely popular with British audiences in the 1960s and 1970s, which offered vaguely farcical plots but relied rather more on camp performances and a stream of sexual double entendre. The first was Carry on Sergeant in 1958. Three of its cast became regulars – Kenneth Williams, Charles Hawtrey and Kenneth Connor. They were joined in most of the later films by Sid James, Hattie Jacques, Jim Dale and Joan Sims. The entire series was produced by Peter Rogers and directed by Gerald Thomas. The formula was revived for Carry On Columbus, made in 1992 with Julian Clary continuing the camp tradition.
