(8km/5m NW of Edinburgh) Attractive seaside village on the Firth of Forth with medieval remains and 18C houses. A Roman fort, of which the foundations have been revealed, was built in about AD 142 to guard a harbour here, at a time when the *Antonine Wall was being contructed from a point further west along the firth.
