Part-time policeman in *Northern Ireland, member of a force composed mainly of Protestants which was disbanded late in 1969, because it was seen as provocative at a time of increasing sectarian unrest in the province. The name derives from the special police force created in 1920, during the *Anglo-Irish War, drawing many of its recruits from *Carson's Ulster Volunteers. The full-time members, the A Specials, were backed up by reserves who put in one night a week, the B Specials.
