British Grand Prix
|
|
The sequence of Grand Prix motor races goes back to Le Mans in France in 1906 (hence the French name for the 'great prize' of the sport), but it only gradually developed into the present international contest; it differed from other top-level races in being from the start between manufacturers' rather than national teams. The first British Grand Prix was held at *Brooklands in 1926; there was then a series in the 1930s at Donington Park near Derby; but the first British Grand Prix in the present unbroken series took place at *Silverstone in 1950. The race was held at Aintree on a few occasions between 1955 and 1962, but the main other location has been *Brands Hatch. In 1993 Britain acquired a second Grand Prix, with Donington Park selected as the location for the Grand Prix of Europe. The course has in recent years been the regular location for the British Motorcycle Grand Prix.
