William Cowper
|
|
(pronounced cooper, 1731–1800) Poet whose recurring bouts of depression and occasional insanity were mitigated by an evangelical faith, powerfully expressed in one of the most popular of English hymns, God moves in a mysterious way. His best poetry is a subtle evocation of nature and the countryside, but he is most widely remembered for *John Gilpin, a story told him by a friend to cheer him up.
