Brief Encounter
|
|
(1945) Film written by Noel *Coward and directed by David *Lean, which has become a classic for the poignancy of its drab middle-class love affair. The encounter begins when a suburban housewife (played by Celia Johnson) and a doctor (Trevor Howard) meet in a station tea room; the station and its passing trains provide a continuing thread in their brief relationship, before they decide to part for ever. The music, from Rachmaninov's 2nd Piano Concerto, tugs at the heart strings in a manner which the protagonists themselves are too British to allow.
