Bridge on the River Kwai

|
(1957) Film directed by David *Lean, from a novel by Pierre Boulle, about British prisoners forced by the Japanese to build a crucial railway bridge in Burma during World War II. The drama centres on the British commander, played by Alec Guinness, whose perfectionism leads him to have such pride in the bridge itself that he opposes the British agents who are trying to blow it up. The music, by Malcolm Arnold, made stirring use of the traditional tune *Colonel Bogey, and the film won Oscars for Arnold, Lean and Guinness, in addition to Carl Foreman (writer) and Jack Hildyard (photography).
