(1921–57) Player of the French horn (and from 1951 of the German double horn) who revealed to an astonished postwar generation the potential of these instruments in the hands of a virtuoso. He was most widely known from his recordings of the Mozart horn concertos, but his brilliance also inspired several leading composers – including Britten and Hindemith – to create new works for him. He was killed in a car crash.
