Member of the *Commonwealth since 1966, having previously been the British protectorate of Bechuanaland. A land-locked territory to the north of South Africa, it was threatened in the late 19C by pressure from the Boers of the Transvaal. British missionaries were well established in the area and in 1885 the Christian king, *Khama III, arranged for his country to become a British protectorate. His grandson, *Seretse Khama (1921–80), was much in the news in the 1950s after marrying a British woman, Ruth Williams. He was exiled from the protectorate by the British government to prevent his inheriting the tribal kingship, but he became the country's first president on its independence in 1966.
