Boots

Britain's leading chemists. The company has developed from a small shop selling herbal remedies in Goose Gate, Nottingham, which was run by the mother of Jesse Boot (1850–1931, baron Trent 1929). Boot built up the business from 1877 by a combination of low prices and bold advertising. By the time he died he had nearly 1000 branches and had long been manufacturing most of the products he sold. In 1968 Boots absorbed an older firm of chemists and hardware merchants, Timothy Whites (founded in 1848 in Portsmouth).
