(1924–95) Playwright who achieved wide fame with his play about Thomas More, A *Man for All Seasons (1960). Its success launched him into films. His script for Lawrence of Arabia (1962) was followed by Dr Zhivago (1965) and then by A Man for All Seasons (1967) – each of the last two won him an Oscar. In 1967 he married the actress Sarah Miles; they divorced in 1976 and remarried in 1988.
