Annual contest between the eights of the universities of Oxford and Cambridge, traditionally accepted as one of the nation's main sporting events. It was first rowed at *Henley in 1829 but has been held on the Thames in London since 1836. An annual contest from 1839 (apart from the war years), it is rowed over a distance of 6.779km (4 miles 374 yards) from Putney to Mortlake – upstream, but rowed on an incoming tide.
