Billy Liar

(1959)
Novel by Keith Waterhouse about an undertaker's clerk in a northern town, a daydreamer who escapes from his drab life into a world of fantasy. A play based on it (by Waterhouse and Willis Hall) was staged in 1960 with Albert Finney; and in 1963 it was made into a film, directed by John Schlesinger, with Tom Courtenay as Billy.
