(1909–97, kt 1957) Philosopher born in Russia, living in Britain from the age of ten. His best-known works are the essay The Hedgehog and the Fox (1953), which is a study of Tolstoy's view of history; Four Essays on Liberty (1969); and Russian Thinkers (1978), a collection of his essays on 19C Russian literature and thought (including a reissue of The Hedgehog and the Fox).
