Bath Festival
|
|
Founded in 1948 by the city council in conjunction with Glyndebourne. The original purpose was an annual celebration appropriate to *Bath, with performances of 18C chamber music in the city's 18C halls. Chamber music remains at the heart of each year's festival (held in May and June), but the entertainment has expanded over the years to include a wide range of orchestral music and opera (in the Theatre Royal) as well as jazz. The music directors – including Thomas Beecham in 1955, Yehudi Menuhin (1959–68) and Michael Tippett (1969–74) – have been of a stature to guarantee high standards.
