(Henry Ernest Bates, 1905–74) English novelist and writer of short stories, whose early work was rooted in the life of the English countryside. Many of these stories provided the basis for the plays in the TV series Country Matters (1972). Meanwhile his wartime experiences with the RAF had extended his range, as in Fair Stood the Wind for France (1944) about a bomber crew shot down in occupied France. In 1991 his fictional Larkin family scored a major popular success on TV in The Darling Buds of May.
