barrister
|
|
A lawyer who has been called to the *Bar; he or she is also invariably a member of one of the *Inns of Court. The work of barristers is distinct from that of *solicitors, for they specialize in pleading the client's case in court (in addition to giving advice on all aspects and applications of the law). At present only barristers are allowed to plead in the higher courts, though this has recently been a subject of much debate as a restrictive practice. About one in ten barristers is a *QC. In Scotland the term for a barrister is an advocate.
