Elongated balloon with tail fins, filled with hydrogen and tethered to the ground by a steel wire – used in *World War II as a defence against attack by low-flying aircraft. A barrage or obstruction of this kind had first been attempted late in *World War I, when a shield of such balloons was known as a balloon apron.
