(Giovanni Battista Barbirolli, 1899–1970, kt 1949)
English-born conductor of Italian descent. After beginning his career as a cellist, he conducted various orchestras before being appointed in 1943 to the *Hallé, with whom he remained till his death. He married the oboist Evelyn Rothwell in 1939.
