Island in the Persian Gulf which has been ruled by the Khalifa family since 1783. By a treaty of 1861 Bahrain came under British protection; Britain agreed to defend the emirate against its neighbours in return for Bahrain not engaging in 'war, piracy or slavery'. This ended when Bahrain became an independent state in 1971.
