(1907–91, DBE 1956) Actress with an exceptionally distinguished career of more than 60 years in a wide range of classic and modern roles. She first appeared at the Birmingham Repertory Theatre in 1926. In London she was Desdemona to Paul Robeson's Othello (1930) and Juliet in Gielgud's production of Romeo and Juliet (1935). She has been closely involved with all the important developments in postwar London theatre, starring in the first season of the *English Stage Company (The Good Woman of Setzuan), becoming a mainstay of the *Royal Shakespeare Company during the 1960s and 1970s, and then appearing frequently at the *National Theatre. Her career in television and films flourished in the 1980s, with awards for The Jewel in the Crown (1984) and for A Passage to India (1985).
