'Gubby' Allen

(George Oswald Browning Allen, 1902–89, kt 1986) All-rounder and a notable fast bowler, playing *cricket for Middlesex (1921–50) and for England (1930–48, captain 1936–7, 47–8). In subsequent years he was chairman of selectors (1955–61) and a leading administrator in English cricket. His nickname derived from the initials of his first three names.
