Age Concern

(London SW16)
Pressure group on behalf of the old, involved also in research and in direct care for the needs of the elderly through regional branches. It derives from the Old People's Welfare Committees, of which the first was set up in 1940 to cope with the problems of the elderly in the war. The name Age Concern has been used since 1971, though the more formal title is the National Council on Ageing. There are separate administrations for Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland.
