Chamber orchestra founded in 1959 by a violinist, Neville Marriner, as a string ensemble for baroque music. It played at that time without a conductor, and gave its first concerts in the London church of *St Martin-in-the-Fields. As the size of the orchestra grew, Marriner became the conductor (there has been no other in more than three busy decades, though Iona Brown and Kenneth Sillitoe lead some performances as first violins). The repertoire was long ago extended up to the 20C, and the Academy is now among the world's most recorded chamber orchestras. It played the sound track for the film of Amadeus (1984).
