One of the most popular of evening hymns, written in 1820 by a clergyman, Henry Francis Lyte (1793–1847), after being present at the deathbed of a friend. It has become a traditional part of the *Cup Final at Wembley, where the vast crowd sings it before the teams come on to the pitch.
