Dundee's daily newspaper, originally established in 1816 as the Dundee Courier and Argus. It was bought in the 1870s by William Thomson (1817–96), a local shipowner, whose descendants built up the publishing empire which has given *Dundee its reputation for journalism. The Courier was the last major newspaper in the country to follow the old tradition (first broken by the *Express in 1900) of devoting the front page to advertisements; it was not until 1992 that its readers were confronted with news in that promiment position.
