(35km/22m NW of Edinburgh) Town in Fife, on the north shore of the Firth of Forth, which dates back to a 6C monastic settlement but which is known now as a superbly preserved small Scottish burgh of the 16–17C thanks to restoration by the National Trust for Scotland. The most notable buldings are the 17C Town House and the late-16C 'Palace' (in fact a merchant's house), with its painted and panelled rooms. The choir of the *Cistercian abbey, dating originally from the 13C but rebuilt in 1633, is used as the parish church.
