croquet

Game using a mallet to knock a ball through hoops, and thus an extension of the French medieval game of paille-maille (reflected in the name of *Pall Mall in London). In its modern form, played on grass, it seems to have developed in Ireland shortly before spreading to England in about 1850. It rapidly became a popular game with the middle classes and in 1869 the All England Croquet Club was founded at *Wimbledon. Today the Hurlingham Club in London is the headquarters of the sport in Britain.
