Corfe Castle
|
|
(34km/21m SE of Dorchester) Ruins of one of the strongest of England's Norman castles (12–13C), in a commanding hilltop position near the south coast. The castle became famous during the *English Civil War for its spirited defence by Lady Bankes, in the absence of her husband, against a parliamentary army. Parliament ordered its demolition in 1646, after capturing it by trickery.
