Iron-Age circular forts of a kind found only in Scotland. Of dry-stone construction, formed of an inner and outer wall often with a stairway rising between the two, they typically enclosed an area some 12m/40ft in diameter with walls also about 12m/40ft high. They were built during the centuries just before the Christian era, and several hundred are known. By far the best preserved is on *Mousa.
