Commonwealth Day
|
|
In 1902, at the end of the *Boer War, an annual celebration of the achievements of the *British empire was informally established, mainly for schoolchildren. May 24 was chosen, being the birthday of the late Queen Victoria. It was called Empire Day, and was given official recognition in 1916. Reflecting the evolution of Empire into *Commonwealth, the name was changed in 1958. It is now celebrated on the second Monday in March.
