College of Arms
|
|
(also called Heralds' College, London EC4) The college, headed by the *Earl Marshal, is responsible for matters of heraldry and genealogy, in particular the granting of new arms (except in Scotland, which has its own establishment in the Court of the *Lord Lyon). The heralds retain medieval titles; there are, for example, three Kings of Arms (called respectively Garter, Clarenceux, and Norroy and Ulster) and four Pursuivants (Portcullis, Bluemantle, Rouge Croix and Rouge Dragon). The college itself is an attractive redbrick building dating from just after the *Great Fire.
