Coade stone
|
|
Artificial stone made from the 1760s at a factory in Lambeth, London, belonging to Mrs Eleanor Coade. A form of terracotta with the addition of finely ground glass or quartz, it was cast rather than carved and was used for statues and reliefs as well as for decorative work around windows and doors. The factory closed in 1840.
