|
|
The name given to a group of influential Anglicans, most of them living in the London district of Clapham, who devoted much money and effort to missionary causes. They were formed in the 1790s and met in the Clapham house of the banker Henry Thornton (1760–1815), with whom *Wilberforce was lodging at the time. Prominent among their activities was the campaign for the abolition of the *slave trade.
