Railway station in south London, opened in 1863, the busiest in the country (and for a time in the world) with about 2200 trains passing through each day. On 12 December 1988 it was the scene of a major accident when an express ran into a stationary commuter train carrying more than 900 passengers, of whom 35 died. The cause was signal failure due to faulty rewiring.
