(15,000 in 1991) Market town in Gloucestershire which was one of the most important Roman towns in Britain, under the name Corinium. The foundations of the forum and of a basilica and amphitheatre have been excavated, and the Corinium Museum displays many of the finds, including mosaics. The wealth of Cirencester in the Middle Ages, deriving from the *wool trade, is seen in the superb *Perpendicular church of St John the Baptist (15–16C), one of the largest parish churches in the country and known in particular for its great 3-storey porch on the market square, built in about 1500 to provide ecclesiastical office space.
