Cinderella

|
(1948) Ballet by *Ashton, the first full-length work by an English choreographer. Sergey Prokofiev had written the music during the war (1941–4), and the first of several ballets created to it was presented in Moscow in 1945, with choreography by Zakharov. In Ashton's version, which has won a secure place in the repertoire of the Royal Ballet, the part of Cinderella was intended for Fonteyn, but an accident kept her out of the role for the first performances; instead it was created by Moira *Shearer, with *Somes as the prince and *Helpmann and Ashton as the ugly sisters.
