The national church in Scotland, *presbyterian in structure unlike the episcopal *Church of England. Scotland was strongly influenced in the 16C by John *Knox, but the *Stuart kings later favoured that part of the Scottish church which had retained its bishops. With the deposition of *James II the episcopal cause was lost, and in 1690 the *Presbyterians were made the established church, their opponents surviving as the independent *Episcopal Church in Scotland. The established link with the state was removed in 1921. A major rift within the church which took place in 1843 (see the *Free Church of Scotland) was mended in 1929. The governing body of the church is the General Assembly presided over by the Moderator, who is elected to serve for one year.
