Chirk Castle
|
|
(34km/21m SW of Chester) Solid and rather squat castle, built 1290–1310 for Roger Mortimer. It has been lived in continuously since then and so has acquired Tudor and 18–19C internal features without ever denying its medieval character. The superb wrought-iron entrance gates of 1719–21 are the work of the Davies brothers of Bersham, near Wrexham.
