chinoiserie
|
|
Decorative style which swept Europe in the 17–18C, when Chinese figures, pagodas, dragons and birds became the fashion in ceramics, fabrics, furniture, silver and wall coverings. Among the best-known English applications of the style are Chinese *Chippendale and the *willow pattern, while the most prominent surviving example, late in the day, is the interior of the *Royal Pavilion in Brighton. The pagoda in *Kew Gardens is a large-scale expression of the same theme.
